If you’re estimating your quarterly taxes, it’s best to estimate high on the FICA taxes so you aren’t charged any interest penalties on overdue tax amounts. The FICA taxes are paid based on your total income from all sources. Nearly everyone is required to pay FICA, whether you’re a full-time or part-time employee. These taxes help to fund the Social Security benefits and Medicare insurance for health coverage when you’re a senior citizen. Since FICA takes a big part of those taxes, you might wonder what it’s used for and how much is required to pay.

FICA tax is a combination of social security tax and Medicare tax. The taxes imposed on social security tax will be 6.2% and 1.45% for Medicare tax for each employee with matching contributions from their employer. Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) is an act that mandates withholding of taxes from employees’ paycheck and matching that with an equal contribution from the employer to fund the Social Security and Medicare Program. If you have a job that produces a W2 plus a self-employed job, FICA taxes will first be taken from the W2 income amount. Then, the self-employment income will be taxed until the Social Security tax max is reached.

Elm, Inc., must deposit $100,000 by Monday, May 8, the next business day. Because this was the first year of its business, the tax liability for its lookback period is considered to be zero, and it would be a monthly schedule depositor based on the lookback rules. However, because Elm, Inc., accumulated $100,000 on May 5, it became a semiweekly schedule depositor on May 6. It will be a semiweekly schedule depositor for the remainder of 2023 and for 2024. The terms identify which set of rules that you must follow when a tax liability arises. Your tax liability is based on the dates payments were made or wages were paid.

You wouldn’t be the first to wonder about FICA tax and why they get so much of your hard-earned money. According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), FICA taxes are made up of old-age, survivors, and disability insurance taxes (Social Security) plus the hospital insurance tax (Medicare). Social Security and Medicare Taxes for Farmworkers

The tax rate for an employee’s portion of the Social Security tax is 6.2%, so that’s a pretty good savings for higher-income workers. (Your employer also pays 6.2% on any taxable wages, and you pay the full 12.4% if you’re self-employed…although self-employed people can deduct part of that amount). For example, an employee with an annual salary $10,000 above the wage base saves $620, a worker with wages $30,000 over the base gets a $1,860 tax break, wages exceeding the base by $50,000 results in a $3,100 tax cut, and so on and so on. The more you make in excess of the wage base, the more money you save on Social Security taxes. The Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA), with state unemployment systems, provides for payments of unemployment compensation to workers who have lost their jobs.

The limit changes each year based on the National Average Wage Index. Roosevelt believed that the money collected from all working Americans through FICA would belong directly to them. He didn’t want the financial benefits for their retirement, disability, or death to depend on federal revenue.
